Do You Trust Your Search Engine?

privacyI do. Usually. A bit less now. I needed to find some flight information so I entered an airport name into my favorite search engine and in no time at all I had a nice page with all the answers. But wait. I may have misspelled the word "airport." So what? The first entry looked just like what I wanted, so let's click on it.

You have zero privacy and a keylogger

keyskeyloggers record what you type on your keyboard, sometimes openly and legitimately but more frequently surreptitiously and illegally. Former Sun CEO Scott McNealy may have been correct when, years ago, he said there's "zero privacy" and urged his audience to "get over it." That doesn't make it any easier to live with keyloggers.

The report's lead author, Andrew Christensen of Danish security consultancy FortConsult, uses Practical Onion Hacking to detail how the anonymity of the system could be undermined by tampering with traffic going through the server through which traffic exits Tor, the so called "exit node".

Identity theft prevention best practices recommended

ID Theft1Those Citibank ads with the victim acting to the perpetrator's voiceover are a funny way to look at what can be the very serious problem of identity theft.

Identity theft can happen in a variety of ways: someone pilfering your wallet or laptop, going through your garbage to retrieve sensitive documents, or even someone impersonating you online. The best way to protect yourself against becoming a victim of identity theft is to use "best practices" in your everyday computing activities.

No privacy on the Wild Web

privacy3The Internet is a strange place, indeed, and the analogy often used to describe it is: The Web is the Wild West. There are few functioning laws, inadequate safeguards, plenty of illegal activity, black markets, scammers and gamblers, as well as legitimate business interests. Like the Wild West, the Web is also a frontier where people travel in anonymity, and it's a place to set up shop and carve out new identities. The threat of identity theft is huge and the threat of privacy invasion is great; anonymity is not guaranteed.

How to keep data private

privacy3Despite their name, personal computers aren't always that personal. You may have to share your machine with others. This can be a problem if you need to keep some of your data private.

anonymous1You are being watched.

Regardless of the government you live under, your actions on the internet are being tracked. Your every search recorded and kept in a database for future use/abuse. US citizens have had their web traffic monitored by the NSA and AT&T, and their every search history subpeaned by a Federal Judge. As we move towards a more wired and connected society, the potentials for abuse grow exponentially. Imagine a future where your past searches label you as a threat to your government. BugMeNot Provides Free Passwords to Sites Requiring Registration

privacyIt's happened to all of us. A friend sends you a link to a story they know you will want to read, and zap! The website requires that you register in order to read the story, even though their site is free.

The canonical example is the New York Times.

Now, there are at least two ways to look at this. One is that the site is letting you have for free what you would ordinarily have to pay for (say, for example, if you bought or subscribed to the print version of the New York Times), and so giving up your email address and demographic information is a fair exchange the price you pay, if you will.

Ditch the Laptop for A USB Key

security1Nowadays, whenever someone plans a long distance trip, staying in touch with the world is a major priority. Bringing a laptop, with all its weight, bulk, and potential for theft is often viewed as a necessary evil. Most people simply cannot be without their email, and access to their personal travelogues. In the past, keeping all the relevant information on a laptop was the only solution to connectivity on the road. With the availability of cheap USB keys and hard drives, though, the world traveler has a few more options.
