Hacked MySpace page serves up fake Windows update

There's now one more reason to be security-conscious while using MySpace.com: fake Microsoft updates. Using a hacked MySpace profile, online criminals are trying to trick victims into downloading a malicious Trojan Horse program by disguising it as a Microsoft update, according to researchers at security vendor McAfee.

Massive embedded exploit web site attack underway

Literally thousands of web pages have been infected with references to malicious code that is hosted on two Chinese-registered domains, one of which was only registered on 28 December 2007. Many of these pages now use security holes in Internet Explorer and RealPlayer to infect their visitors with malware.

Trojan Hijacks Google Text Ads

BitDefender nabs a new Trojan commandeering Host files to deliver third-party advertising instead of Google's. Malware authors are beginning to nibble at Google's text advertising money pie. According to a warning from anti-virus vendor BitDefender, a new Trojan is making the rounds, hijacking Google text advertisements and replacing them with ads from a different provider.

International Websites Plagued By Attacks

Government websites in the US and abroad suffered hacks that caused them to point to pharmaceutical and adult content sites. On the domestic side, we saw the after effect of a breach of an official California government site result in the entire ca.gov domain being taken down by careless administrators with the federal General Services Administration.

Nirbot, Even Botters Need Attention

hackerA new bot has been making the rounds this winter and has been dubbed "Nirbot", "Rinbot", "Vanbot", or "IrnBot" depending on the AV vendor. This is one of the first new IRC bot codebases to emerge in the past few years, but like many other Windows bots it’s written in C++. Unlike Spybot, Agobot, or other popular Windows bots this malware does not have a rich set of capabilities.

Defacement archive Zone h.org has become the victim of a domain hijack attack

Symantec unveils SONAR to find zero day attacks

symantecStarting next month, users of Symantec's Norton products will have a new tool to help them avoid unpatched software flaws. Called the Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response (SONAR), the new security software will look at the behavior of programs running on the computer in order to decide whether they are malicious. This is a departure from Symantec's traditional signature based antivirus protection techniques, which compare the program's code to a database of known malware.

Pirates Spoof Vista's Enterprise Activation

Windows VistaPirates are circulating a hack that lets them activate counterfeit copies of Windows Vista using a spoofed server that Microsoft relies on to make sure enterprises switch on the new operating system. The software, loaded with the long name of "Microsoft.Windows.Vista.Local.Activation.Server-MelindaGates" is available on several pirate Web sites.

Microsoft RSS Blog Burned By Image Prank

microsoft logoWhen the RSS team posted an image taken by a former employee to their blog, they did so without asking the photographer for permission, and he responded by swapping the image with a pornographic one. Hotlinking to an image in ex Microsoft staffer Niall Kennedy's Flickr stream proved embarrassing to the people behind Microsoft's RSS Blog.

TiVoToGo Encryption cracked?

hackerWell, it looks like someone cracked the DRM on TiVoToGo, making it possible to decrypt the files on non Windows platforms. It is C code which reportedly runs on Linux, Solaris, and Windows. (I'm sure someone will port it to Mac if it doesn't run there already.) This is the Wiki reporting the development, and this is the project page on SourceForge.

Indicted: Romanian Hacked U.S. Computers

hackingbewareA Romanian national was indicted on charges of hacking into more than 150 U.S. government computers, causing disruptions that cost NASA, the Energy Department and the Navy nearly $1.5 million. The federal indictment charges Victor Faur, 26, of Arad, Romania with nine counts of computer intrusion and one count of conspiracy.

Hacker Redirects Bank Customers To Phony Site

hackerSeveral people who went online Friday to do some banking wound up victims of a scam, officials said. Community America Credit Union confirmed to KMBC that a hacker managed to redirect people from the company's Web site to a phony site. Community America said it caught the intrusion within a few minutes, but about a dozen people accessed the phony site. The company said it is contacting the victims.

Hacker unlocks Apple music download protection

hackingbewareA hacker who as a teen cracked the encryption on DVDs has found a way to unlock the code that prevents iPod users from playing songs from download music stores other than Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes, his company said on Tuesday.

Jon Lech Johansen, a 22 year old Norway native who lives in San Francisco, cracked Apple's FairPlay copy protection technology, said Monique Farantzos, managing director at DoubleTwist, the company that plans to license the code to businesses.

Botnet keepers rake in adware cash

hackerAccording to research by the German Honeynet Project, a botnet controller who installed adware including DollarRevenue on compromised machines earned over $430 in a single day, just from the DollarRevenue software.

The zombie net in question was mostly created using the recently-patched MS06040 vulnerability in Windows, and took control of 7,700 machines in a 24 hour period.

Zombies crawl over wiki exploits
